Worker gets critical illness cover payment after intervention

The importance of putting in place insurance protection such as critical illness cover from an early age has been highlighted by a young man from Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire.

James Healy was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma just months after taking out a £7.50-a-month critical illness policy worth £23,000 in October 2008, according to the Sunday Mail.

However, the 23-year-old encountered a problem when he tried to claim because the insurer insisted that he must have known he had the disease when he took out the cover.

This was because of the short period between when the policy was taken out and when Mr Healy was diagnosed.

But with the help of Jane Barrie of the Sunday Mail, the call centre worker is to receive a cheque worth £23,540 from Co-operative Insurance after a four-month delay.

The company decided to "settle the critical illness claim in full without delay", according to a company spokesperson.

This type of cover is designed to cater for a selected list of critical conditions including certain forms of cancer.

Recent research from Scottish Provident showed that an 'it will never happen to me' attitude is preventing some people from putting cover in place.
