Life insurance important for contractors
Contractors with dependants need life insurance to ensure their children's financial futures are protected even if they pass away.
Contractors' jobs can be hazardous and sometimes lead to injury or death, as was highlighted by an incident in which an EDF Energy Contracting worker passed away after falling from height in 2007.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has fined the firm £160,000 following the death of employee James Gordon, who died after sustaining injuries from a fall that happened while he was dismantling a mobile tower scaffold in West Sussex.
Mr Gordon, who died at the age of 63, was just two years away from retirement and left behind a widow and several grandchildren.
HSE inspector Russell Beckett said: "It is important that all tower scaffolds are erected and dismantled correctly and that guard rails are fitted so as to prevent falls."
Mr Beckett stated that "all too often tower scaffolds are used incorrectly without the correct handrails" and added that every working platform should be fitted with suitable edge protection.
Life insurance pays out a lump sum after the policy holder's death.
