Life cover important for construction workers
A case involving the death of two workers in the building industry has underscored the need for contractors with dependants to have life cover.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted and fined crane company WD Bennett's Plant & Services following the death of the two workers and the injury of a third person.
Steve Boatman and Gary Miles were working on a crane at a construction site in Durrington, Worthing, when it collapsed because some bolts had not been properly tightened.
According to HSE inspector Peter Collingwood, who led the investigation, the two men needn't have lost their lives because the accident could have been prevented.
"It was caused by the inadequate supervision of a worker who was not trained, nor competent for the task that he was asked to undertake," he explained.
"To avoid future tragedies like this, employers and contractors must ensure that tower crane work including erection and dismantling is only undertaken by trained, experienced and competent people who are supervised adequately."
Life cover is designed to provide a vital source of income for dependants through a lump sum or monthly payments if the policy holder dies.
