Income protection cover a financial safety net against swine flu
Contractors without income protection cover could find themselves in a precarious situation in coming weeks as swine influenza cases are predicted to rise with the advent of winter.
However, those with this protection can take solace from the fact that if they are unable to work due to flu, they will have a continued source of income until they make a recovery.
For these incapacitated individuals to claim payments, they will need to provide proof of illness to insurers and the best way to do so is through a GP report, according to Tony Harris, founder of financial advisers Contractor Money.
In an article in Contractor UK, the financial expert said that mounting pressure on GPs, brought about by cases of swine flu, have made obtaining these reports difficult.
"Many insurers are now offering alternatives to a GP report as a means to making an underwriting decision and are embracing alternative methods such as tele-underwriting," he wrote.
Tele-underwriting involves insurers contacting policy holders "to go through any medical issues that you have had previously rather than request details from your GP".
Some 11,000 new infections of swine flu have been reported in the past week, according to the NHS.
