Machinery accident highlights importance of life insurance
The risks of operating machinery without adequate guarding and also having insurance have been highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which has prosecuted chewing gum manufacturer the Wrigley Company.
Company employee Philip Poyntz was left unable to work following an accident in early 2007 that happened while he was trying to clean a machine without proper guarding in place.
Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector David Cory said that the incident "was entirely preventable and happened because the moving conveyor belt was unguarded".
"This meant that Mr Poyntz's arm could be drawn into the machinery and caught in the conveyor's tail drum, resulting in very serious injuries from which he is still suffering today."
He added that the worker has not been able to return to his previous job following the incident "and remains signed off from the company".
Such cases highlight the importance of people putting in place cover such as accident, illness and unemployment protection, which would come in handy by providing a source of income until a recovery is made.
