Insurers criticised for adopting unfair positions with some CI covers

Some insurers have been accused of using dodgy techniques to attract consumers to their critical illness (CI) cover by having clauses that would make it difficult for people to make a successful claim.

According to Legal & General (L&G), some providers are taking marketing angles with critical illnesses covers for diseases such as diabetes and angioplasty, reports the Health and Insurance magazine.

Bernie Hickman, L&G's managing director of protection, has said because of increasingly common cases of diabetes, some people may be attracted to a policy that covers it but the small print makes the difference.

Only Type 1 diabetes, which affects around five to 15 per cent of sufferers, is covered but some providers add a clause excluding people who get the disease before they turn 40.

However, according to the NHS, this type of diabetes often develops in teenage years and Mr Hickman stated that it is "not right or fair for insurers to say they cover" the disease.

"Insurers are seeking a marketing advantage but is it treating customers fairly? It's a bit like a life insurance policy with a death exclusion," he is quoted as saying by the publication.

Only a selection of critical illnesses is covered by this type of insurance.
